HempTEC® Hurd

New Zealand Industrial Hemp Hurd “Shives”

HempTEC® Hurd is the graded woody core of New Zealand-grown industrial hemp, separated from the bast fibre and cleaned for use as a natural building aggregate. It is supplied loose and untreated for cast and sprayed building systems using lime and other compatible binders.

Grown, processed and graded by Rubisco, with traceability from the paddock to the production batch.

Industrial Hemp Hurd

Hemp hurd, also known as shives, is the light, woody inner core of the hemp stalk. At Rubisco’s Ashburton site the crop is decorticated, the hurd is separated from the fibre, then cleaned and graded to a defined particle size. The result is a consistent aggregate with low dust and minimal loose fibre, two factors that directly affect water balance, mixing and finish in hemp-lime and other cast or sprayed systems. Typical applications include cast wall infill, sprayed wall systems and insulating floor and roof layers. HempTEC® Hurd is also supplied for animal bedding.

Developed for builders, specifiers and system providers who need hemp hurd that behaves the same way from batch to batch.

Material Science

Hurd is the inner woody core of the hemp stem, the part the bast fibre grows around. It is made up of holocellulose, the cellulose and hemicellulose that form the plant’s cell walls, and is supplied with no treatments, additives or dyes. Its light, porous particles give it a low bulk density and allow it to take up water, so moisture content and absorption are central to setting mix water and binder dosage.

Performance

Consistency is what makes hurd perform as a building aggregate. HempTEC® Hurd is graded to a defined particle range, supporting repeatable mixing, placement and finished density. Dust is controlled to 2 per cent or less passing 0.25 mm and loose fibre is kept low, with no visible fibre clumps to disrupt coating or handling. Moisture is held below 13 per cent. The specification has been developed against leading European construction-hurd benchmarks and is validated with each binder system. Always follow the binder or system provider’s approved formulation and installation guidance.

Technical Data

HempTEC® Hurd is 100 per cent New Zealand-grown industrial hemp hurd, supplied untreated. Particles measure 2 to 30 mm long, 1 to 7 mm wide and around 1 mm thick, with a loose bulk density of 55 kg/m³ and moisture below 13 per cent. Hurd is compressed into 10 kg bales that expand around 3.2 times to roughly 180 litres of loose material. Every batch is traceable to its farm, harvest, storage and production run.

Growing Hemp

Rubisco grows its own industrial hemp and processes it at its Ashburton site in Canterbury. Cultivation, crop reception, decortication, fibre and hurd separation and cleaning all sit within one operation, giving Rubisco direct control over the quality of the material it supplies.

That control carries through to traceability. Each batch of HempTEC® Hurd can be traced back through production, storage and harvest to the farm it was grown on, giving specifiers clear provenance for the material in their projects.

Hurd and fibre come from the same crop. While the hurd goes into building systems, the bast fibre is processed for Rubisco’s textile and biocomposite products, with research and product development led from its Christchurch site. If you are specifying hemp-lime, developing a binder system or trialling hurd in your own process, our team can help you match the grade and supply to your application.
