Natural Fibre Twill Fabric

Twill reinforcement is a woven natural-fibre fabric designed for bio-composite manufacturing where strength, surface stability, and a controlled structural pattern are required. The twill formation allows fibres to move in a uniform, angled pattern, giving moulded components improved drape and resilience. This makes it well suited for panels, product casings, interior elements, and parts that need predictable shaping during layup. When combined with a compatible binder, the reinforcement forms a stable composite layer with balanced rigidity and tensile behaviour.

Rubisco’s twill is developed for teams exploring natural-fibre composites that offer reliable performance and clean material pathways.

Material Science

BioTEX® Twill starts with New Zealand hemp, grown by Rubisco and fully traceable from the paddock. Hemp bast fibre is rich in cellulose, giving it high stiffness for its weight. Lighter than glass fibre, it brings natural strength to composite design without the extra mass.

Performance

Tested in infused epoxy laminates, BioTEX® Twill delivers consistent strength and stiffness with low variation between samples. The twill structure holds its shape during layup for predictable results. Hemp naturally holds moisture, so conditioning before layup is recommended.

Technical Data

BioTEX® Twill is a 2/2 twill weave fabric made from hemp grown by Rubisco. The diagonal weave lets fibres move in a uniform, angled pattern, giving the fabric good drape over curved moulds. It is designed as a natural reinforcement for composite panels, casings and interior parts.

Composite R&D

BioTEX® Panel is the result of a collaboration between Rubisco and Gurit, a global specialist in composite materials. The panel pairs BioTEX® Twill with Gurit’s composite system in a sandwich construction, where natural-fibre skins are bonded either side of a lightweight core to create a stiff, structural panel with a refined, natural surface.

The project shows how New Zealand hemp can move from the paddock to an engineered component, bringing natural fibre into applications traditionally served by glass and carbon reinforcement. It is a working example of material science and design thinking applied together.

Rubisco works with designers, engineers and manufacturers exploring bio-composite development, from early material selection through to trials. Whether you are developing a new product, rethinking an existing part or testing natural fibre in your own process, our team can help you find the right fabric and the right pathway forward.
